Meet Dr. Richard Hand: A Renowned Expert in Finance and Accounting at UNC Kenan-Flagler

Dr. Richard Hand, a distinguished professor of accounting at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School, has an impressive academic background that has equipped him with extensive knowledge and experience in finance and accounting. His credentials include a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from Bristol University in England, as well as his MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business (formerly GSB), where he taught from 1988 to 1993.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Hand has also had a successful career as an advisor and board member for several startups in the medical device industry. Over the past 20 years, he has served on the boards of six North Carolina-based startups, providing valuable guidance on business planning and valuation.

Dr. Hand's experience in the not-for-profit sector is equally impressive, having served as Treasurer of the Chapel Hill Bible Church from 1996 to 2005 and Trinity School of Durham & Chapel Hill from 2006 to 2016. He has also had a distinguished career at UNC Kenan-Flagler, where he served as Associate Dean of the top-ranked MAC Program from 2007 to 2011.

Dr. Hand's academic achievements have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the UNC Kenan-Flagler Distinguished Research Award in 2019 and the Weatherspoon Awards for his teaching in both the MAC and MBA programs in 2020.

As a visiting faculty member at UNC Kenan-Flagler, Dr. Hand is the Robert March & Mildred Borden Hanes Distinguished Professor of Accounting. He teaches courses in financial statement analysis across various programs, including MBA, Masters of Accounting (MAC), Undergraduate, and Executive Development Programs.
